6 Tips to Make the Most of Your Career Fair

Fall is in the air! Or we like to think of it as career fair season. We always look forward to touching base with the students we know, as well as seeing some new faces. Often our relationships develop at the beginning of a student’s freshman year and can eventually lead to a full-time position at Omnitech after graduation.

Whether you are looking for an internship or full-time position, walking into a career fair prepared can make all the difference. As you head out to career fair and networking opportunities, here are some tips to set you up for success:

Checklist for Career Fair Experience:

Resume - Polish it up! Use your Career Office on campus; they are a great resource for giving input and assisting you in making sure your resume is error-free.

Your Pitch - Practice a quick introduction - SMILE! Share your plans and goal for the future, steps you have taken so far, share why this company fits your plan. Be humble.

Your Presentation - Dress as if you are going to a job interview. Looking like a young professional will set a great first impression. Make sure you have plenty of resumes to hand out and invest in a portfolio.

Career Fair Prep - Know what companies you want to visit at the career fair and check out their websites beforehand. Knowing a little about the company will be very helpful when visiting with the booth reps.

Follow Up - The earlier you can do this the better, thank them for taking the time to get to know you and sharing information about the company.

Final Tip - Start early in your college career to do the above steps. It doesn't always feel like it, but college goes fast. Being in front of companies early and often provides Top Of Mind Awareness to recruiters that you are serious about your future. Your academics are very important, but networking at career fairs will get you the job!
